Long-Tail Keywords

Specific, multi-word search queries with lower volume but higher buyer intent than short, generic keywords.

Full definition

Long-tail keywords are detailed search phrases (typically 4+ words) that signal specific buyer intent. For contractors, long-tail examples include 'how much does seamless gutter installation cost in Overland Park' or 'best HVAC repair company Lee's Summit MO.' Long-tail keywords convert at significantly higher rates than head terms because the buyer has done more research.

Why it matters

Long-tail traffic is your highest-conversion traffic. Programmatic SEO captures it at scale.

Example

Ranking #1 for 'gutter installation Kansas City' might drive 200 visitors at 2% conversion. Ranking for 50 long-tail variants might drive 800 visitors at 8% conversion.
